Methods of English Language Teaching

  1. The Grammar Translation Method
  2. The direct Method
  3. The Audio Lingual Method
  4. Total Physical Response and Suggestopedia
  5. The Silent Way

  1. The Grammar Translation Method

This is the oldest and traditional method of teaching English. Especially in India, this method is used as English is taught as Second language. The structure of a foreign language is best learnt when compared and contrasted with the mother tongue.

  1. The Direct Method

Direct method is the method through which students learn to communicate in the target language and not involving L1 in the language learning process. This method is also known as Natural Method; because the characteristics we observe in language teaching is similar to acquisition of L1, but it was very difficult to bring exact environment in which L1 is acquired.

  1. The Audio Lingual Method

The Audio Lingual method is used to improve communicative competence in learners. It is the most effective way for to learn language in an interesting way through different skills. This method was initially called the Army Method , and was the first to be based on linguistic theory and behavioral psychology.

  1. Total Physical Response

Total physical response is a language teaching method developed by James Asher, a professor of psychology at San Jose State University. This method is based on learning through physical activities.

5.Suggestopedia
Suggestopedia is an innovative method that promises great effective language learning results.

  1. The Silent Way

The Silent Way is a language  teaching method created by Caleb Gattegno in 1963.  Language is not learned by repeating after a model; the students need to develop their own “inner criteria” for correctness.

  1. Which method appealed you the most from above given methods? Give reasons.
Mostly, I appealed the Audio Lingual method . Because, through this method we can easily learn any topic very easily. There are many online courses are available. We can appeare for any online quize. We can also learn with the help of internet. The most important thing is that we can learn in the absence of teacher.

  1. Tell something about your favourite method used by your teachers from School till PG. How is their method unique?
I like the Grammar translation Method because from my school to UG I learned under the Grammar Translation method. And I like this method because with the help of mother tongue I can understand the concepts of the topics and also more think about any  topics. So, I like this method. But in PG sometimes in UG Proffersors used various methods.

  1. Tell something going about the method you do not like from School till PG. Give reasons.
I never like the silent way method. Because in this method there is no interaction between teacher and students. So I do not like this method.
