Ngugi Wa Thiong’o

Ngugi wa Thiong’g is an award winning, world renowned Kenyan writer and academic who writes primarily in Gikuyu. His work includes novels, plays, short stories, and essays, ranging from literary and social criticism to children’s literature. He is the founder and editor of the Gikuyu language journal Mutliri.

Decolonising The Mind

Most of African writers used English, French, and Portuguese languages. Ngugi told that the relation of Africans to those imposed languages is a very different one from that which the same Africans have to the native languages which are they speak at home. The colonizers used different language while they are speaking and writing and used natural language when they are playing and speaking with their family members. Clearly it was a need to create a literature that conveyed the true African experience from the perspective of the local, not the visitor or outsider. The local language is the part of rutine life. Ngugi described his experience at the Kamitriithu Community Education and Culture Center and the effort to stage drama there- in Gikuyu. For new generation the language of the former imparialists has also become something different.  Ngugi is to be lauded for his efforts in that area and for his willingness to stand up for what he believes. Among the problems with Decolonizing the Mind is its political and ideological slant. The book also focuses on art-with a purpose : it is pedagogic or political or helping preserve traditions or forge identities. Decolonising the Mind is an interesting, if occasionally too heated work.

The Pinteresque features of The Birthday Party

The Pinteresque features of The Birthday Party In roduction:- Two of the notable facts about Harold Pinter were, first , that he was a Jew, born of Jewish parents, and , second, that he worked as an actor for some time before he became a playwright. Pinter was born on the 10 th October, 1930 in   Hackney , a London borough. By the time of his birth the Jewish population of North London had risen from about 5000 in 1880 to about 40,000. The North London Jewry was known for its solid middle class respectability and religious conformity. In view of the economic insecurity which the family felt, Pinter’s father worked very hard, working twelve hours a day, making clothes. Eventually, however the old man lost his business and had to work for somebody else. Pinter never forgot this situation in his early life – the combination of calm and unrest beauty and ugliness; and these qualities permeate his work. Personal history had deeply influenced all Pinter’s writing.
