Journalism :- Feature writing and Lead writing

Feature Writing:-

Feature writing has developed from being a marginal and subordinate supplement to news in newspapers to becoming a significant part of journalism on all platforms. It emerged as a key force driving the popularization and tabloidization of the press. The exigence is articulated through three characteristics that have dominated feature journalism from the very beginning : it is intimate, in the sense that it portrays people and milieus in close details and that it allows the journalist to be subjective and therefore intimate with his or her audience; it is literary in the sense that it is closely connected with the art of writing, narrative , storytelling, and worlds of fiction : and it is adventurous, in the sense that it takes the audiences on journeys to meet people and places that are interesting. A feature story is distinguished from other tapes of non fiction by the quality of the writing. Stories should be memorable for their reporting, crafting, creativity, and economy of expression.

Examples:-

News Feature:-

The news feature is just what the name implies: a feature article that focuses on a topic in the news. News features are often published in the main news, or “A” section, or the local news, or “B” section, of a paper.  These stories focus on hard news topics but aren’t deadline stories. They bring a softer writing style to hard news. These articles often are people stories, focusing on individuals behind the news, and they often seek to humanize a set of statistic. This kind of feature story focuses not on a single crime , drug induced death, or meth – related arrest; instead, it briefly tells the story of one or more of the above mentioned characters, such as recovering meth addicts. The news feature seeks to put a human face on a crime statistic to bring the story to life for readers and inform them of potential problems with the issue.

Trend:-

The trend story would likely appear in the lifestyle, fashion, coocking, high tech, or entertainment section. Theses stories explore trends such as a new look in women’s going nuts over, an indie band attracting a cult following, or a show on an obscure cable channel that’s suddenly hot.
Trend stories take the pulse of the culture at the moment, looking at what’s new, fresh, and exciting in art, fashion, film, music, high technology, cooking, and other areas. Trend stories are usually light, quick, easy to read pieces that capture the spirit of whatever trend is being discussed.

Lead Writing:-

A lead paragraph is the opening paragraph of an article, essay, book chapter, or other written work that summarizes its main ideas. Styles vary widely among the different types and genres of publications, from journalistic news style leads to a more encyclopaedic variety.

Short and simple:-

Edna Buchanan, the Pulitzer Prize winning crime reporter for The Miami Herald, wrote a story about an ex con named Gary Robinson. One drunken night in the 80s, Robinson stumbled into a Church’s Chicken, where he was told there was no fried chicken, only nuggets. He decked the woman at the counter, and in the ensuing melee, he was short by a security guard.

The Pinteresque features of The Birthday Party

The Pinteresque features of The Birthday Party In roduction:- Two of the notable facts about Harold Pinter were, first , that he was a Jew, born of Jewish parents, and , second, that he worked as an actor for some time before he became a playwright. Pinter was born on the 10 th October, 1930 in   Hackney , a London borough. By the time of his birth the Jewish population of North London had risen from about 5000 in 1880 to about 40,000. The North London Jewry was known for its solid middle class respectability and religious conformity. In view of the economic insecurity which the family felt, Pinter’s father worked very hard, working twelve hours a day, making clothes. Eventually, however the old man lost his business and had to work for somebody else. Pinter never forgot this situation in his early life – the combination of calm and unrest beauty and ugliness; and these qualities permeate his work. Personal history had deeply influenced all Pinter’s writing.
