The Birthday Party

1) Why are two scenes of Lulu omitted from the movie?
Thr the Birthday Party is a comedy of menace.  May be the director doesn't want to change the tone. The play is a comedy of menace so we can say that it is very dangerous and threatening qualities. In the movie, we can see a threatning scene of rape in blackout and this genre keep its quality so two scenes of Lulu omitted from the movie.

2) Is movie successful in giving us the effect of menace?  Where you able to feel it while reading the text?

Yes, the movie is successful in giving us the effect of menace. We can find the effect of menace in the interrogation scene where the number of questions asked with loud sound effect and it is also irritating me. We can find Stanley has sweat  in fear and frustration and also ran in fear when he came to know about two strangers.

3)        Do you feel the effect of lurking danger while viewing the movie? Where you able to feel the same while reading the text

Yes, I felt the effect of lurking danger while viewing the movie when suddenly it was knocking.

4What do you read in 'newspaper' in the movie? Petey is reading newspaper to Meg, it torn into pieces by McCain, pieces are hidden by Petey in last scene.

There are various interpretations of the news paper. In the first scene, we can see that Petey read news paper and Meg doing the work. So,  we can interpret that Petey is very intellectual person rather than Meg. Because reading the news paper is the sign of intellectuality. The another interpretation of newspaper is about McCain's mentality. McCain torn the newspaper into the pieces  and this shows the ill motive of him about destroy Stanley as newspaper.

5)Camera is positioned over the head of McCain when he is playing Blind Man's Buff and is positioned at the top with a view of room like a cage (trap) when Stanley is playing it. What interpretations can you give to these positioning of camera?

Camera is positioned over the head of McCann when he is playing Blind Man's Buff and is positioned at the top with a view of room like a cage when Stanley is playing. Now my interpretation is that Stanley cannot escape because he was trapped by two strangers.

6)
"Pinter restored theater to its basic elements: an enclosed space and unpredictable dialogue, where people are at the mercy of one another and pretense crumbles." (Pinter, Art, Truth & Politics: Excerpts from the 2005 Nobel Lecture). Does this happen in the movie?

"Pinter restored theatre to its
Basic elements : an enclosed space and unpredictable dialogue, where people are at the mercy of one another and pretense crumbles." Yes,  it happens in the movie. First all shows the love and care for Stanley but when he was in trouble no one help him.

7)How does viewing movie help in better understanding of the play ‘The Birthday Party’ with its typical characteristics (like painteresque, pause, silence, menace, lurking danger)?

We can say that viewing movie help in bettrr understanding of the play 'The Birthday Party',  because as we all know that visual and listening scenes are better than only reading. Through reading it is very t
tough to understand the silence, pause painteresque menace and lurking danger but through visual images we can understand it very easily. So,  camera angles help us a lot to understand this kind of play.

8)With which of the following observations you agree:

o “It probably wasn't possible to make a satisfactory film of "The Birthday Party."
o “It's impossible to imagine a better film of Pinter's play than this sensitive, disturbing version directed by William Friedkin”

I am agree to the second point:
 “It's impossible to imagine a better film of Pinter's play than this sensitive, disturbing version directed by William Friedkin”.

9)If you were director or screenplay writer, what sort of difference would you make in the making of movie?

If I was director or screenplay of this movie, I don't want to change any scenes or musics or characters  because I can't find any mistakes.

10)Who would be your choice of actors to play the role of characters?

Stanley  = Saif Ali Khan

Goldberg  = Anil Kapoor

McCain = Akshay Khanna

Lulu = Priyanka Chopra

Petey = Amol Palekar

Meg = Rekha

The Pinteresque features of The Birthday Party

The Pinteresque features of The Birthday Party In roduction:- Two of the notable facts about Harold Pinter were, first , that he was a Jew, born of Jewish parents, and , second, that he worked as an actor for some time before he became a playwright. Pinter was born on the 10 th October, 1930 in   Hackney , a London borough. By the time of his birth the Jewish population of North London had risen from about 5000 in 1880 to about 40,000. The North London Jewry was known for its solid middle class respectability and religious conformity. In view of the economic insecurity which the family felt, Pinter’s father worked very hard, working twelve hours a day, making clothes. Eventually, however the old man lost his business and had to work for somebody else. Pinter never forgot this situation in his early life – the combination of calm and unrest beauty and ugliness; and these qualities permeate his work. Personal history had deeply influenced all Pinter’s writi...
